I have been made aware that for example the German highest court (Bundesgerichtshof) ruled that
"if an email is made available for retrieval on the recipient's mail server
during normal business hours, it is generally deemed to have been received
by the recipient at this time. It is not necessary for the e-mail to actually
be retrieved and acknowledged for it to be received."

It appears to me that a log entry like "status=sent (250 2.0.0 Ok: queued as 12345ABC678)"
sufficiently confirms that an email has been delivered and is therefore no longer the
sender's responsibility.

I agree, errors do happen sooner or later. Rejecting a message at smtp
stage at least gives the sender the option to contact the recipient by
other means.
