thanks so much for all these pointers, that helps a lot indeed!

I will look into how to best implement this and then follow-up here with 
the list when I have a solution.

The recipient domain is also opening a ticket with Mimecast. Should I 
get any helpful news, I'll let you know - my gut feeling is they need to 
lower their DKIM rejection policy, as Mimecast unlikely will enable 
8BITMIME from what I read here and elsewhere.
